ARS Steps In To Support BARCS In Their Mission To Save AnimalsIn the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, pet adoption surged in American households. According to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®), many individuals found solace in adopting and fostering animals from shelters and opened their wallets for their furry companions. However, as 2021 rolled around, there was a sudden influx in the number of animals entering shelters, leading to overcrowding. Over time, many shelters reached full capacity, and this overcrowding issue has resulted in an unfortunate necessity: an increase in the euthanization of animals due to space constraints.

Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS) is an “open admission shelter” that provides refuge to every abandoned animal. They face a daily influx of over 30 animals, totaling over 10,000 annually, including dogs, cats, kittens, puppies and exotic wildlife. July saw an overwhelming surge, with 687 animals surrendered in six days. For the staff at BARCS, it's an emotional and gut-wrenching experience to see so many animals in need of care and not have the capacity to help them all. Sadly, this often means being euthanized, which takes a toll on the staff who care deeply for every animal.

For more than 80 years, Advance Relocation Systems (ARS) has helped families and businesses in Maryland and across the country with various moving services. Community involvement is also a priority for us. We have collaborated with BARCS multiple times in the past. With euthanization becoming a 'necessary evil' at BARCS due to their lack of capacity, the ARS team wasted no time in extending a helping hand to them. Recognizing that BARCS heavily relies on private donations, our leadership team knew their support could make a significant difference. With the help of a donation provided by ARS, Michelle Green, our Director of Commercial Sales, coordinated a Staff Appreciation Week. This heartwarming initiative was aimed at lifting the spirits of the staff who tirelessly cared for the shelter's animals. This special week stretched over six working days and included many fun activities, including raffles, monetary prizes and lots of yummy food and snacks.

“I think that it's important for the staff and volunteers to know that we appreciate them. They have one of the toughest jobs ever. They truly give their hearts and souls to try to save every animal that comes in. And no matter how much we try, we can't save them all. The Staff Appreciation Week not only brought smiles to the BARCS team but was also a heartfelt reminder that together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and those who care for them.” — Michelle Green, Director of Commercial Sales, Advance Relocation Systems.
