Everyone knows Mardi Gras is the signature celebration of southern Louisiana, particularly in New OrleansThe festivities culminate on Shrove Tuesday, aka “Fat Tuesday,” the day before Ash Wednesday which starts the Christian time of Lent for fasting and almsgiving. So, Mardi Gras gives folks a chance (or is it an excuse?) to get their ya-ya's out so they may better focus on the spiritual self. As movers in Maryland, we understand our state is long ways from the Big Easy (it’s over eleven hundred miles away). But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the fun and flavor of this feast right here in the Chesapeake Bay state and nearby. You’ll find many local Mardi Gras themed events; here is a sampling.

Feb 18 

  • Who’s behind that mask? The Mardi Gras Masquerade at the Sofitel in Washington, DC, is a festive dance with New Orleans style jazz and a cash bar. Attire is black tie, and if you come without a mask, one will be providedHere’s the scoop at EventBrite.

Feb 25

  • Residents of Charm City get their beads on at Mardi Gras Festival in Power Plant Live! Come to Baltimore’s entertainment district, just one block from the Inner Harbor, for a big bash that features a shopping cart float parade, King Cake eating contest, Cirque-style performers and live zydeco musicHere’s more about it.

  • If you’re a dog lover, check out the “BarkHappy Mardi Gras Pawty” to benefit the Baltimore Humane Society. It takes place at World of Beer from noon to 2:00 pm. Here’s the info on EventBrite.

Feb 28 

  • Mardi Gras North features Louisiana and Cajun food with beer and cocktail specials at several local tavernsAt Kooper’s Tavern, you can also hear DIG Jazz Combo perform a musical tribute to New Orleans’ much beloved Preservation Hall Band. (Pass the hat and maybe they’ll play “When the Saints Go Marching In.”)

  • The Clarendon Mardi Gras Parade bills itself as the largest such celebration around Washington DCIt’s a family-friendly event with New Orleans inspired food, live jazz, and dancing in the Clarendon Ballroom.
