Do you like fungus? Specifically the edible kind? The Mushroom City Art Festival is for you. It takes place on October 22 at Leakin Park. You can hear experts talk about all aspects of mycology (the scientific study of shrooms) and sample dishes made with mushrooms, see mushroom art, make mushroom clothing—do you see a pattern here?
BAUGHER'S ORCHARDS AND FARM
How about an fall outing at an honest-to-goodness orchard? Through October you can pick your own apples and pumpkins at Baugher’s Orchards and Farm in Westminster. Weekends are especially fun for kids, with hayrides, petting zoo, face painting, and games. Come hungry and eat at Baugher’s Restaurant. BENNETT’S CURSE HAUNTED HOUSE
If October calls to your inner ghoul, you need to put Bennett’s Curse Haunted House on your agenda. It may be the biggest, spookiest assortment of macabre monsters in the region. As they claim, the place proves that “not all nightmares happen while you are sleeping.” Or, check out the Field of Screams with terrifying outdoor hikes through fright-infested forests. Bring a friend—someone you trust can talk you down from a tree.
RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
Although it’s a good little drive to the south, Annapolis goes all medieval with a Renaissance Festival until October 21. The village of Revel Grove comes alive with lords and ladies, knights and peasants, and a bevy of fantastic characters and activities that hearken back 500 years. Be prepared to find things in the more than 100 shops that you won’t find anywhere else this side of the Atlantic.
RAVENS FOOTBALL
Of course, fall marks the start of football season. And Baltimore movers love the Ravens and taking in games at the beautiful M&T Bank Stadium within walking distance of the city’s famous Inner Harbor (an attraction in itself). Between now and the end of November you can catch them in action against the Giants, Steelers, Browns, and Bengals. Go, Purple Pain!
