Halloween is almost upon us, which means it’s time to dig deep and start preparing for your costume! This year, we challenge you to forgo buying a pre-made costume, and instead, try your hand at making your own from scratch.
Luckily, moving boxes and packing supplies make for great Halloween costume fodder—and if you just moved then you are sure to have some on hand. Need boxes? Here are some places you can get them for free.
Here are 10 easy costumes you can make from boxes and packing supplies:
- Dice
What you need:
- Cardboard box
- White paint
- Black construction paper
- Glue
Paint the box white. Cut out holes for head and arms. Cut out black paper circles and glue them to the box.
- Barbie Doll
What you need:
- Wardrobe box
- Barbie wrapping paper (about 2 rolls)
- Hot pink paint
- Clear shrink wrap
- Adjustable straps
- Duct tape
- Barbie and Mattel logos, printed out
Duct tape the sides of the box that are hanging down. The duct taped side will serve as the back of your box.
Paint the box pink. Decorate the box with a Barbie logo and a Mattel logo, and anything else that reminds you of your favorite childhood toy.
Cut out the opening of the box, where you will be on display. Make sure you also cut a hand hole on the side of the box, and some air holes at the top of the box.
Paper the inside of the box with the Barbie wrapping paper.
Cut slits into the back of the box for your shoulder and waist straps. You will have to measure these to make sure that the straps keep the box from resting on your head. Insert straps.
Cover the front opening with shrink wrap.
And that’s it! You’re a certified Barbie.
- Tetris Blocks
What you need:
- Cardboard boxes
- Paint for the blocks
- Black duct tape
The “T” and “L” blocks are going to be your best bets for a night of smooth sailing. Basically, you’ll want to have one box with cutouts for your arms and neck. Use black duct tape to tape the other faces of the boxes together, until you get the shape you want. All of the edges of the faces should have black duct tape, resembling a true Tetris block.
Finally, use whatever color you’d like to paint the blocks. Got a lot of boxes? Tetris makes for one of the best group costumes of all time.
- Playing Cards
What you need:
- Cardboard box
- White paint
- Red paper
- Glue
Paint the box white. Cut out holes for head and arms. Cut out red paper hearts or diamonds and numbers to resemble a playing card.
- Lego Block
What you need:
- Cardboard box
- Six empty yogurt tins
- Super glue
- Paint
First, cut out holes in the main box for your arms and neck. Super glue the yogurt tins face-down onto the main box so that they stick out like the pegs of a Lego block.
Paint the entire costume with the color of your choosing, and voila! You have a lego block.
- Bubble Wrap Tutu
What you need:
- Bubble wrap
- Ribbon
- Stapler
Cut the bubble wrap into the shape of a tutu. Staple it around a ribbon that you’ll wear and tie around your waist. Continue adding and stapling bubble wrap to the ribbon, using different varieties of lengths so that it looks like a real tutu.
- Shrimp Nigiri
What you need:
- White styrofoam packing peanuts
- An old foam mattress pad
- A piece of wide black ribbon
- Orange spray paint
Glue the packing peanuts together. This will be your “rice.” Then, cut the foam mattress pad into the shape of a shrimp. Spray paint it orange. Use the black ribbon to secure the shrimp and rice to your frame. For more on this costume follow this tutorial here.
- Popcorn
What you need:
- Tall cardboard box
- Packing peanuts
- Red and white paint
Cut out holes for your arms and head. Superglue a bunch of packing peanuts to the top of the box, so that it looks like popcorn. Paint red and white stripes all over the box. Paint a label if you want to go the extra mile!
- Cat and Litter Box (Couples)
What you need:
- Cardboard box
- Glue
- Sand/Dirt
- Cat ears
- Cat makeup
Perhaps the easiest, and funniest costume out of the bunch, this one requires a partner. Do your makeup like a cat, and don’t forget to create cat ears! Now comes the fun part: Spread a layer of glue on the outside of your “litter box” and cover with sand or dirt. Once its dried, cut out your arm and head holes. Using the excess cardboard you cut away, crumple and fold it up to resemble “turds” that you can glue to your litter box.
- Photobooth Strip
What you need:
- Long cardboard box
- Black and white/colored photos of you making different faces
The fun of this costume is in how silly you can make the photos for your photobooth strip. Cut the cardboard box into one long rectangle. Glue your photos onto three equal sections. Cut out a face hole for your head, which should be towards the middle of the strip.
