Moving With PETS? ARS Provides Empathy, Time & SupportMoving can be stressful, but when you have pets, the challenges can multiply. As a family-owned and operated moving company in business for more than 85 years, we understand that your pets are part of your family, and we’re here to help make their transition as smooth as possible. With decades of experience in handling every aspect of a move, we’ve learned a few tips to ease the process for both you and your furry companions. Whether you're moving across town or across the country, these expert tips will ensure your pets are comfortable and safe every step of the way.

Prepare In Advance Before The Big Day Arrives

  • Pets are intuitive and sensitive to changes. Stabilize the environment around them and gradually introduce them to these changes one at a time.
  • Familiarize them with various packing materials. Ensure that the sorting, packing and loading builds up around them slowly. Save their favorite belongings for the end. This helps reduce anxiety or fear.
  • It is advisable to visit your vet for a health check-up. Confirm that the vaccinations and medical records are up-to-date. Also renew your pet’s microchips and ID tags before moving.
  • Choose a pet-friendly mode of transportation and carry all essentials like food, water, blankets, bowls, medicines, toys, carriers etc. for your pet’s ease. Keep a recent photo of your pet just for emergencies.

What To Do On Moving Day

  • All the hustle and bustle can cause your pet to become scared and restless. Offer some quiet and private space like a bedroom or a bathroom for your pet to stay in.
  • Giving them company and constant attention will help them stay calm. Keep interactions with strangers or new people to a minimum. Accidental escapes from their happy place can be avoided with the help of door signs.
  • Stick to their regular routine for eating, playing and potty breaks. Too many changes can alarm them while the usual timetable will reduce confusion.
  • Prepare a well-ventilated and safe carrier for them to travel in if going by car. Take adequate stops along the route. For long distance or international moves, opt for direct flights and select pet-friendly hotels to stay while in transition.

Get Them Acquainted To Their New Surroundings

  • Allow them to explore the new home gradually so that they adapt to the environment naturally. Acclimatization will be easy if they are introduced to each room one by one slowly.
  • Again, give them a personal place decked out with their favorite things. This will keep their mood jolly and divert their attention from the big changes.
  • Continue with the same feeding and walking routine just like old times. Unpack their belongings and arrange them in a similar manner to your previous house.
  • Update the microchip or collar information with your new address and contact details. The most important part is to give your pet some time to accept and adjust to the new location.
