Moving is stressful. Losing items that you've spent your life collecting can make that stress so much worse. On average, more than 7,000 incidents of lost items and scam moves are reported to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) annually. Most people never recover their lost items, but in Alejandro Tavizon’s case, he was reconnected with a priceless treasure thanks to the efforts of our moving team.
Alejandro Tavizon, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, moved with Advance Relocation Systems in July 2021 from North Carolina to Maryland. One of the items included in his shipment was a walking stick. It had deep meaning to him and it was misplaced at some point during his move. Because we knew the value it held for him, we promised to continue looking for it. More than 7 months later, we recovered the walking stick and were elated to return it to Captain Tavizon.
Alejandro first acquired the walking stick on the weekend of 4th of July in 2016, when he climbed Mount Fuji in Japan. Many people buy walking sticks when climbing Mt. Fuji. On their ascent, there are stations along the way where they can get their sticks stamped with the elevation and station number. While the stick itself doesn’t cost much, it becomes a meaningful keepsake. For Alejandro, his walking stick signified his first real job in the U.S. Marine Corps, his first time overseas and a treasured memory of doing something unique with his friends. Being reunited with it was something he was extremely thankful for.
“The biggest takeaway from this was really just the nice human factor, in regards to someone just connecting out and remembering this. I mean the guy has probably moved 10 or 12 people a week, and more than 6 months later when they find the stick, he just so happens to remember one individual from that day—one person that he helped move who told a story about a Japanese walking stick. That somebody took a minute to care, still went and looked for it and kept their promise to find it. That was really what moved me the most about it.” - Alejandro Tavizon.
